Frank Blackmore

I design and build spaces that tell stories: branded experiences, exhibits and themed environments that move audiences through a space and leave them somewhere new; from concept through creation.

PLATE 01 Experiential & Exhibition

Environments that stage a story

Branded experiences, trade environments, and exhibitions, designed as immersive spaces first, then produced and installed. The goal is always the same as it is on a stage: control what a visitor sees, feels, and remembers as they move through the room.

PLATE 02 Design Process

Model, render, realize

3D modeling and rendering aren't the deliverable; they're how a design gets solved. Every environment is drafted, modeled to scale, and rendered to test light, sightlines, and materials long before anything is built, so the version that gets installed is the version that was designed.

01

Concept

Sketches, references, and ground plans establish the story and how a visitor moves through the space.

Sketch · Plan · Research
02

Model

The space is built to scale, with accurate dimensions, real materials, and a working set of drawings for the shop.

Vectorworks
03

Render

Lighting, finishes, and sightlines are tested and communicated to clients before a dollar is spent building.

04

Build

Drawings hand off to fabrication and install, and the render becomes a room you can walk into.

Scenic design for the stage

Scenic design for live theatre and film, the discipline behind everything else: telling a story through a physical space, on a schedule, on a budget, as part of a team of storytellers.

PLATE 04 Carpentry & Fabrication

Built by hand

Drawings are only as good as what gets built from them. Three streams of build work: activations for the marketing floor, scenery for the stage, and furniture and built-ins in the shop. A designer who can also build makes better, more buildable drawings.

PLATE 05 About

W. Frank Blackmore

I'm a designer and builder of experiential and themed environments, with a foundation in theatrical scenic design. I care about the same thing across every medium: building a space that tells a story and transports the people who step into it.

My background is in traditional live theatre, but through my MFA I became drawn to work beyond the stage: themed entertainment and exhibition design, where an audience doesn't watch a space so much as walk through and live in it. I took classes in Themed Entertainment Design at Carnegie Mellon's Entertainment Technology Center, and in 2021 completed Pratt Institute's Exhibition Design Summer Intensive, adding practical skills like visitor-flow planning and materials selection for different applications.

Today I work across experiential production and design, carrying projects from concept sketches through scaled 3D models, client-ready renders, and hands-on fabrication. Being able to draft it, render it, and build it means the space that gets installed is the one that was designed.
